For nearly two years I’ve lived above the same shop. I see the folks who work there constantly. We may not have lingering conversations each time, but that’s just because I’m maladroit and seemingly always carrying bags of cat litter. (Marry me.) Today one of the fellows says that he’s moving upstairs in a few months and that, “Now maybe we can be friends.” While I’m aware that my unfortunately sarcastic response was not the correct choice, what would be? Is it crying and handwringing? Is it buying more things from them to curry favor?
